Work with files in Claude: from attachments to a reviewable result
Translated from Korean. View original
In regular Claude chat, you can attach a document or image for a summary and request a new file in the format you need. First check that the material was read correctly; then creating the deliverable is easier to review. This guide follows upload through download and shows what to compare with the original. It does not organize folders directly on your computer.

Choose both the file to upload and the file to receive
The input and output can use different formats. For example, read an event PDF and receive a supplies list as a Word document. Start with one file and a result whose content is easy to check.
Check Claude's supported upload formats and file-creation capability separately. Attaching a file in regular chat differs from connecting and directly editing the original folder on your computer. This exercise downloads a newly created result.
Confirm what was attached
Upload the material using the file control or drag it into the web conversation. Once attached, ask: ‘Briefly summarize the title and main sections, and tell me if you could not read any part.’
If filenames are similar, confirm you uploaded the intended file. When uploading multiple versions, identify which is authoritative. Writing the path of an attachment does not grant access to other files on your computer.
First extract only what you need
Example request: ‘Make a table of supplies, responsible people and deadlines from the attached event notice. Leave missing items undecided and note the heading under which each was found. Do not create a file yet; show it in chat.’
Compare the table with the original for missing supplies and misread dates. For a long document, work through specified chapters or sections. List unreadable items for review rather than filling them by guessing.
Ask for a file using the reviewed content
Once the table is right, follow up: ‘Turn the verified table into a supplies checklist. Provide a DOCX with a title and checkboxes.’ Specify whether you need a downloadable document or text to read in chat.
If file creation fails, check whether Code execution and file creation is enabled in your account or organization settings. Display names can vary by app language and company administrators may control the setting; check the current instructions.
Artifacts display and edit standalone results such as long documents or code beside the conversation. Seeing content in a separate pane is different from generating a downloadable file in the desired format, such as DOCX. Check that the file exists.
Compare tables and images with the original
Text and charts in PDFs or images can be misread. Compare important values directly, especially in small text, scans and multi-column tables. Even correct extracted text can have altered row or column relationships.
Handling of visual elements varies by file type. Non-PDF documents are primarily text-extracted, so do not assume embedded images were read. If an image matters, attach that section in a supported image format and explain what to inspect.
Actually open the downloaded file
Download the result and open it in your document app. Check not only content but also whether Korean text renders correctly, tables are clipped and checkboxes and pages are easy to read.
Make specific requests for corrections, such as ‘The second table runs off the page. Narrow the columns and regenerate it.’ Distinguish filenames and keep the final version separately so you know which to use.
Before sharing, check recipients and contents. Downloading a result is different from publishing or sharing an Artifact; you do not need to publish a file just to keep it privately.
Frequently asked questions
Does uploading a file change the original on my computer?
This regular-chat exercise reads the attachment and returns a new result file. Uploading alone does not request direct organization of the original computer folder.
Does it read every image inside an attached document?
That depends on file type and document structure. Non-PDF documents are primarily text-extracted, so do not assume images were checked. Attach necessary visuals as images and compare important values with the original.
There is a table in the answer, but no download.
A table displayed in chat is different from a downloadable file. Specify the format and ask for a new file. If file creation is reported as restricted, check account or organization settings.
